RE: 8th Newsletter

This week's promise: God will conquer death

What is real?

"O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” - 1 Corinthians 15:55 NLT

Redemptive Reality

"Roberto Benigni, who wrote, directed, and starred in Life is Beautiful, is a comic genius who has been called the Italian Charlie Chaplin. But the subject of his 1997 film, the Holocaust, is anything but funny.

Benigni's character, a sad-sack waiter named Guido, courts the affections of a local schoolteacher and through various hilarious adventures wins her heart. They marry and have a son.

Then things take a dark turn: Father and son, who are Jewish, are sent to a concentration camp. To shield his son from the horrors they're going through, Guido concocts a wild story, telling the boy that the whole experience is really just an elaborate game.

How did Benigni dare to use humor in a film about a great moral evil? He did it by expressing the Christian idea that there's more to life than what we see. In the scene in which the father is being led away to be killed, he spots his son and makes a funny face. The message is that there is something that triumphs over even death, some transcendent reality that, even in this ultimate moment of gravity, enables Guido to make his son laugh.

Most of our cultural leaders operate from a purely naturalistic perspective, but Scripture teaches that there are eternal things. Life is Beautiful is not the gospel story, but it does point to the gospel because it's about how God's redemptive reality trumps the very worst this world has to offer.

The Sin

Two elderly, excited Southern women were sitting together in the front pew of church listening to a fiery preacher.

When this preacher condemned the sin of stealing, these two ladies cried out at the tops of their lungs, "AMEN, BROTHER!

"When the preacher condemned the sin of lust, they yelled again, "PREACH IT, REVEREND!"

And when the preacher condemned the sin of lying, they jumped to their feet and screamed, "RIGHT ON, BROTHER! TELL IT LIKE IT IS... AMEN!"

But when the preacher condemned the sin of gossip, the two got very quiet. One turned to the other and said, "He's quit preaching and now he's meddlin'."

The times and seasons are God's

"There is a time for everything, a season for every activity under heaven. A time to be born and a time to die. A time to plant and a time to harvest. A time to kill and a time to heal. A time to tear down and a time to rebuild. A time to cry and a time to laugh. A time to grieve and a time to dance. “ - Ecclesiastes 3:1-4NLT

What a difference a year can make

"On November 3, 1745, David Brainerd, a 27-year-old missionary to the Indians of Crossweeksung, New Jersey, baptized fourteen converts. This was part of what he called a ""remarkable work of grace"" with which God blessed his labors among the Native Americans of New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Brainerd became a leader of the Great Awakening and a missionary to the American Indians after being expelled from Yale in his third year when he questioned the salvation of a faulty member.

The baptisms on this day brought the total of baptized believers to 47. A year later this remarkable work of God among the Indians continued, but the work of David Brained was coming to a close. Brainerd, at the age of 28, was dying of tuberculosis and would have to return to New England where friends and family could care for him.

Desperately weak in body on November 3, 1746, Brainerd spent the day bidding farewell to his beloved Indian flock. Tears flowed as he left each house. His farewells took most of the day, and in the evening he rode off, his mission completed. A year later David Brainerd was dead at the age of 29.

Everybody loves magic!!!

Eddie wanted desperately to have sex with this really cute girl in the office ....But she was dating someone else.

One day Eddie got so frustrated that he went to her and said, 'I'll give you $100 if you let me have sex with you.'

The girl looked at him and then said, 'NO.'

Eddie said, 'I'll be real fast. I'll throw the money on the floor, you bend down, and I'll finish by the time you've picked it up.'

She thought for a moment and said that she would consult with her boyfriend,

She called him and explained the situation. Her boyfriend says, 'Ask him for $200, and pick up the money really fast. He won’t even be able to get his pants down.'

She agreed and accepts the proposal.

Over half an hour goes by and the boyfriend is waiting for his girlfriend's call.

Finally, after 45 minutes the boyfriend calls and asks, 'What happened?'

Still breathing hard, she managed to reply, 'The bastard had all quarters!'

RE: 21st NEWSLETTER

This week's promise: God will conquer death

Are you living like God conquered death?

"Praise the Lord! Praise the name of the Lord!” - Psalm 135:1 NLT

Praise the Lord

"Psalm 135 begins with "Praise the Lord" and it ends with "Praise the Lord." That's the way Billy Bray started and ended things, too.

In the early 1800's Billy Gray was known as a no-good drunken miner in the village of Twelveheads in Cornwall, England. Then, through the reading of a book by John Bunyan, Billy was converted to Christ, and he was never the same again.

"I can't help praising God," he once said. "As I go along the street, I lift up one foot, and it seems to say, 'Glory,' and I lift up the other, and it seems to say, 'Amen.' If they would put me into a barrel to keep me quiet, I would shout, 'Glory' out of the bunghole. Praise the Lord."

Billy would often say about the Lord, "He has made me glad and no one can make me sad; he makes me shout and no one can make me doubt; he makes me leap, and no one can hold down my feet."

Shortly before his death, Billy was asked if he was afraid, and he answered, "My Savior conquered death. If I was to go down to hell, I would shout, 'Glory, glory' to my blessed Jesus until I made the bottomless pit ring again, and then old Satan would say, 'Billy, Billy, this is no place for you; get out of here.' Then up to heaven I should go, shouting, 'Glory, glory, praise the Lord.'"

The Hamster Show

A guy walks into a bar and asks the bartender if he will give him a free beer if he shows him something amazing. The bartender agrees, so the guy pulls out a hamster, who begins dancing and singing "Tuff Enuff" by the Fabulous Thunderbirds.

"That IS amazing!" says the bartender and gives the guy his free beer.

"If I show you something else amazing, will you give me another beer?" The bartender agrees, so the guy pulls out a small piano and a hamster and a frog. Now the hamster plays the piano while the frog dances and sings "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" by Bachman-Turner Overdrive.

The bartender, completely wowed, gives him another beer. A man in a suit, who's been watching the entire time, offers to buy the frog for a princely sum, which the man agrees to.

"Are you nuts?" asks the bartender. "You could've made a fortune off that frog."

"Can you keep a secret?" asks the man. "The hamster's a ventriloquist."

RE: 15th Update

This week's promise: God will conquer death

For all the saints

"For all the saints, who from their labors rest,
Who Thee by faith before the world confessed,
Thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest,
Alleluia, Alleluia!

And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long,
Steals on the ear the distant triumph song,
And hearts are brave again, and arms are strong.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

For All the Saints
William Walsham How (1823-1897)

So now you Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens along with all of God's holy people. You are members of God's family. We are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself. We who believe are carefully knit together, becoming a holy temple for the Lord. Through him you Gentiles are also joined together as part of this dwelling where God lives by his Spirit.

Ephesians 2:19-22 NLT

"

A hero of the faith

"In 1864 Bishop William How wrote this hymn for All Saints Day. He cited Hebrews 12:1 in his original title, but he drew on all of Hebrews 11 for inspiration. That's the famous "faith chapter," which praises the faithful deeds of a score of Old Testament heroes.

The author might be considered a hero of the faith himself. He was a man of the people, regularly reaching out to minister to the poor and needy in his area. Once he listed the characterisitics that a minister should have; among them was being "wholly without thought of self." Those who knew him said that Bishop How was like that, selflessly caring for others.

Here is Mac’s spreadsheet for this game: http://tinyurl.com/2e4llr

If you checked on Mac’s spreadsheet for this game, you will find he corrected it and update – Just IN TIME.

On are three little bitty lines, we got the Mega Ball last night! So we got $2.00. We have two draws left in this game, so I didn’t even shower, and just slapped on clothes, rode the bus to Kroger. Their Kiosk was down (Surprise Surprise) so I had to go to the counter.

And since I was at the Service Center in Kroger, I made them check all my tickets for all my games, including my own.

I didn’t even pick up our money, I just handed her a play slip for 1 Quick Pick for 2 drawings.

So now with only 2 drawings left in this game, you now have four lines.

You should know by now (if you’re a member of Mega Millions Lottery Pool – Game 39, you would know) that no one won the Jack Pot last night.

The Jack Pot for Friday, February 8th, 2008 is worth $122 Million. The Cash Option is worth $76,400,000.00.

There were 10 shares sold in this game. Remember this game started out as Power Ball game, and I sold shares at $20.00

Here is what you could win if we have the winning numbers for Friday, February 8th, 2008.

Now allow me to tell you a story. After I did the 14th update, I noticed that I would have won $12 Million. I was excited, until I realized that I couldn’t pray for this pool. And he is why:

On 01/31/2008, I was having dinner with a friend. He has been unemployed for over 30 days and almost on the street. I have help him with is cell phone and giving him money, and feeding him.

On this night at the Bronx we were talking of Spiritual things. I expressed to him a story of my various pools and the dreams I’ve had of having won the lottery, not just once, but several times over. I told him that I have asked my members to pray for the pools they are in.

You would not believe the number of people in my pools who have either e-mailed me or told me they can’t pray for us. They feel that is wrong.

As I told Gary this story, I told him that I didn’t understand people giving me $10 or $20 per month to play in a Lotto Pool that could not pray for that pool. Why are you playing? Don’t believe we will win?

Well I told Gary that I have learned the art of praying without ceasing. But I get so dishearten when I realize the God it not hearing me or telling me NO.

I tend to have bad results for prayer for myself, but I have great results when I pray for others. I told him of one of times that I had to pray for my minister. I would be awaked night after night, with the sense of urgency to pray for Pastor Bob. I didn’t even know why I was praying for him, but I obey and prayed night after night.

As I told Gary this testimony, the story, while it happened years ago, brought me to tears. It has a very happy ending and my prayers were answered.

That night while having dinner, I ask Gary if he would pray for my pools from that night until Easter Sunday. In return, I would cease all prayers for anything other than Gary.

I told him that I would only pray for him getting a career, not just a job, and it would fall into his lap, he would make more money than ever before. God would do miracles in his life and he would be restore him to the income that he had before.

I cautioned him to ask for the Maximum, not the minimum because God as been know to give us exactly what we pray for to the very detail of our prayers.

Now I have kept my end of the bargain. And I ask that God get Gary to work by Monday! (Okay, I admit, I admit that I am very Bold when talking to God.)

Well, before Monday Gary and I had chance to talk. I told him of what I had been doing, and the told me that he couldn’t do exactly as I had asked. But, he did pray for me and told God he knew how long and how hard I had been working on my Lottery Pools, and would God give just a little something.

I had explained to Gary that if I won, or one of my groups won, then he would never be homeless. I would be able to afford to get my own place, and he would benefit from me winning.

He knows that, and I’m positive God knows that.

Now I was not pleased with Gary’s pray to God. So in a long long e-mail to Juanita Brown and gave her the entire story. I begged to pray for this group, because I couldn’t.

Now Juanita wrote back a short sentence that she already prays for my pools.

Now God has been answering prayers. On a whim, I had purchase 1 draw for 5 lines for the Mega Million, and I even megaplied, which I don’t usually do.

Well on Saturday I discovered that I had won $40.00 on that Mega Million ticket. And I had won $4.00 on my Cash Five ticket, giving me a total of $44.00.

Gary was worried that I would have enough money to pay his cell phone bill. He needs to for his job hunting. And now with an extra $44.00, yesterday I paid his bill for him at Metro PCS.

I was worried the when my rent check clear, and my tithe check clear, I would be over drawn. I got a check from the Pennsylvania Lottery, which I deposited today.

As it turned out, I was able to help Gary out, and I will have maybe $23.00 leave in my checking account when everything clears.

So I think God answered Gary’s prayer, he ask for a little bit to help me out, and I got just that, a little bit to help me out.

Now you know that Juanita told me she prays for all my pools, and she is in all my pools, expect for one. This was the only game to have a win last night, and you one $2.00. You have two more drawings left, and now you have 4 lines.

I’m asking every one of you who reads this e-mail, to pray for us to win the Jack Pot.

Now I already know of two people who will NOT. And I can not, well at least I don’t think I can. My deal with Gary was that I would pay only for him to get a job until after Easter and nothing else.

I have not heard from Gary since last Saturday. He may very well have gotten a job and has not had time to call me. At least, I am thinking in that direction.

But that leaves 7 of you who could begin prayers for this group.

Now another problem I have with people, is some of my friends believe that you only ask God one time. They think asking for God the same thing over and over is a sign of NOT trusting God.

I counter that with this verse:

Luke 18

The Parable of the Persistent Widow

1Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. 2He said: "In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared about men. 3And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, 'Grant me justice against my adversary.'

4"For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, 'Even though I don't fear God or care about men, 5yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won't eventually wear me out with her coming!' "

6And the Lord said, "Listen to what the unjust judge says. 7And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? 8I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?"

I know that on many of my games, I tell you that I pray for us to win on the last drawings, because the Jack Pot will be bigger.

You needn’t do that, you can start now because the Jack Pot is big enough now.

Now before I get off my soapbox, I ask Waylon Coulter a few weeks back his feelings on praying for the lottery. Did he feel it was wrong.

I didn’t even know if Waylon was Christian when I asked this question. We were outside at work, smoking, and oddly enough no one else was around.

He gave the most interesting response:

“Michael, a lady once told me something I will never forget. ‘If you think it, God knows it, might as well pray for it.’”

Waylon told me that he took it to heart and prayed for something he had been wanting. He told me that God answered his prayer immediately.

I don’t care if we win this on Friday or the following Tuesday, we only have to two more drawings in this game, so it needs to happen soon.
